The 2012 Good Design Awards took place last week in Japan and one of the winners that stood out from an aesthetics standpoint was the hexagonal card game created by a game designer and fellow graphic designer. Inspired by a meeting with legendary designer of board games Alex Randolph, Rocca takes it’s name from rokkaku – hexagon in Japanese – and moves between the genres of 2D and 3D games. Movies like this only appear once a decade. A complete award-winning original story that empowers the heart of young black girls and the bond with their fathers. Beast of the Southern Wild is my Oscar pick for this year. In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six yr old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the naural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. A Must See!

Bryan Nash Gill - Woodcuts, 2005-2011
Gill uses recycled lumber, covers the surface of the wood with ink and washi paper and with his fingers and fingernails presses and scratches the pattern of the tree rings into the paper until the impression is completely and evenly represented. Glory!

Brazilian artist Erneto Neto has created an installation where the viewer enters the sculpture, walking from the entrance of the ground floor to a sky-path. Strung throughout the membrane are small satchels containing spices of various color and scent, further engaging the viewer with the interactive sculpture. The work is formed with the ideals of neo-concreto and ‘places the spectator at the center of creative action’ concept in mind, engaging many of the viewer’s senses in order for the individual to fully comprehend the piece. The installation is titled Crazy Hyperculture In The Vertigo of The World and can be seen in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Glory!

These photographs, which show a dimly-lit Picasso wrapped in neon strokes, are the results of five sessions held with lighting innovator Gjon Mili in 1949. He was known for pushing the boundaries of his craft, so when Pablo Picasso was offered to paint with light, he jumped at the chance. In a series known as his ‘light drawings’, the images show the artist waving a strobe light to create figures reminiscent of the screaming cattle in Guernica or the curvaceous woman in The Dreamer. Picasco was truly an artist’s artist. Glory!

Lenny Kravitz founded Kravitz Design Inc., in 2003 as a way to transform his eclectic taste and lifestyle into innovative, unique and dynamic design solutions for both commercial and residential projects. “Design has always been a great interest of mine. Even as a child, it was very important as to how my room was arranged and what items were in it. When I started having my own homes, I found that many of the furnishings and accessories that I was envisioning for the space did not exist. So I began to make them myself. Years later, after doing several of my own homes, I realized that I needed to stop and focus on trying to design for other people.
